Dig

To anyone that can sit down, relax and just listen to music, this is for you because I will open you up to a world you think you may already know.
To start off, let’s think of our top five tunes. I’ll wait… Got it? I bet you can sing, or play those songs without hearing them through your speakers. Most people would grasp on to the vocals and others may pay attention to a particular instrument, especially if you happen to be a musician.
So for those five songs, listen closely to what’s supporting the focus at the time. For example, listen to the rhythm guitar during a shredding solo. Listen to how the drums set up the rest of the band with a rhythmic transition into a catchy chorus or bridge. Listen to how the back up vocals compliment the lead. If you dig a little bit, you’ll learn to peel the layers off the surface and begin to have a much deeper appreciation of an already badass song.
As a songwriter and arranger, I listen deep to ALL the instruments and vocals to produce a unique and well grounded piece of music. Structures don’t stand tall for long without the support it asks for, correct?
So the next time you’re listening to any sort of tune, focus on what’s holding it up rather than the parts you’re already familiar with and let me know what you dig up!

Schroeder out!
